2008-2009 CIRTL Network Online Course Offerings for Graduate Students and Post-Docs
Students from CIRTL Network institutions may participate with or without credit, as they prefer. Graduate students, at campuses other than the host institution, who are interested in receiving course credit are encouraged to work with the CIRTL Network campus leader or their advisor to receive independent study credit. Credits offered by the host campus will vary.
Fall 2008

Title: Teaching and Learning Science: Changing Student Misconceptions

Description:This CIRTL Network* course will explore how undergraduate students understand their disciplines. Participants will discuss student misconceptions and conceptual gaps, which are among the most serious barriers to new learning. All participants will engage in small research projects to understand undergraduate conceptions, using Ed's Tools system (bioliteracy.net). Each course participant can focus on their own academic area (e.g. physics, geosciences, etc). Credit options available.
NOTE: This course is offered using distance learning technology; you will be learning with graduate students and post-docs from a wide variety of universities across the CIRTL Network*.

Title: The College Classroom

Description: This course will help participants learn the basics of effective teaching as well as ideas on the forefront of college education. These will include the core CIRTL ideas of teaching-as-research, learning community, and learning-through-diversity. Participants will develop their teaching philosophy and explore how it may impact their future students. Course participants will design a course curriculum accordingly and learn how to monitor and investigate the effectiveness of the learning environment.

Title: Effective use of Technology in Teaching and Learning

Instructors: Folahan Ayorinde, Howard University, Professor of Chemistry; Jake Blanchard, UW-Madison, Professor of Engineering Physics; Alan Wolf, UW-Madison, Center for Biology Education.
Description: Develop new approaches to effective use of instructional technology in your teaching practice. You will learn how technological choices can affect the learning of today’s diverse student populations. You will complete a research project to study how technology can affect student learning in your discipline.
Technology Requirements: Students will meet together in a technology-enhanced classroom. This course will use interactive web and teleconferencing technology.
Title: Diversity in the College Classroom
Host Campus: University of Wisconsin-Madison
Instructors: Don Gillian-Daniel, UW-Madison, Asst. Director, Delta Program; Chris Pfund, UW-Madison, Assoc. Director, Delta Program
Description: Become a better college instructor while advancing diversity issues in your classroom practice. You will explore how you define diversity and discuss the ways different definitions of diversity might influence how we teach our disciplinary topics. You will create a diversity-focused plan of action for your teaching practice.
Technology Requirements:
- individual access to a computer in a quiet location with a high-speed internet connection
- a phone line with a speaker phone or headset (some students have successfully joined the teleconference using VoIP tools such as Skype)
- a webcam (if you don’t have one, they can be obtained for about $25)
