Participants who engage in CIRTL programs may attain three levels of achievement: CIRTL Associate, CIRTL Practitioner, and CIRTL Scholar. While the CIRTL Network provides broad guidance on these achievement levels, specific requirements are determined by each institution for their participants in order to provide flexibility in aligning network and local programs.

CIRTL Associate
CIRTL Associates have a strong foundation in evidence-based teaching and learning practices, are able to describe these practices, and recognize their value for improving undergraduate learning.
Students take 1 course (8 weeks) or an intensive workshop (~24 hours) on evidence-based teaching practices
Attend one exploratory session from each of the following:
- Student Experiences in STEM
- Pedagogical Innovations in STEM
- A CIRTL online network workshop
CIRTL Practitioner
CIRTL Practitioners critically reflect on their knowledge and experiences of teaching and learning, often by designing and/or implementing a Teaching-as-Research project.
1-unit Teaching-as-Research (TAR) Seminar or 1-unit Teaching Writing (WAC) Seminar
Submit a teaching philosophy statement
Attend 1 additional professional development offering (workshop, FLC)
Programs that attain CIRTL Practitioner Level are:
- Teaching-As-Research Fellows Program (TAR)
- Graduate Student Leadership Institute
- Advanced Teaching Practices: Research-Driven Approaches for Higher Education
CIRTL Scholar
CIRTL Scholars add to community knowledge about teaching and learning, most often by presenting or publishing their work to university, regional, national, or international audiences.
Present results from a Teaching-as-Research (TAR) project at an academic conference or publish in a peer-reviewed journal.
