The Director of Graduate Student & Postdoctoral Scholar Engagement will advance the UCLA Teaching & Learning Center (TLC) mission to elevate and celebrate inclusive excellence in teaching by engaging our community of educators in equity-minded and research-based teaching practices, instructional innovation, and pedagogical research.
Reporting to the Vice Provost for Teaching and Learning, the Director of Graduate Student & Postdoctoral Scholar Engagement leads the campus strategy to support the pedagogical development of graduate students and postdoctoral scholars. To this end, the Director works collaboratively with TLC staff; university staff, faculty, and administrative partners across campus divisions and units; and colleagues at other universities, to create and maintain institutional pathways for developing and recognizing graduate students and postdocs as educators on our campus, as well as future faculty and future educational developers. The Director also contributes to the development of UCLA instructors as equity-minded mentors of graduate students and postdocs who currently teach or are pursuing academic careers that involve college teaching. This work entails strategically designing and directing graduate student and postdoc professional learning programs that align with national standards for teaching development, as well as with campus equity goals for both undergraduate and graduate student success.
The Director is a core member of the TLC’s leadership team and oversees a team of full-time professionals and several part-time staff and students. The Director leads the development of resources and services and evolution of professional learning programs supporting current graduate students who serve as teaching assistants (TAs) as well as those attracted to careers in college teaching. The Director oversees program administration and assessment for the unit; serves as a resource for and driver of cross-disciplinary, evidence-based pedagogical support for graduate students and postdocs; teaches courses and facilitates implementation of pedagogy workshops; represents the TLC on UCLA, UC, and national committees and projects; and initiates programmatic growth and scholarship in areas of importance to the TLC’s mission and UCLA’s strategic priorities.
